Last year’s basketball season ended with Jamarion hitting the final shot.

It was a shot Jamarion never dreamed he would have the opportunity to take. The reality was that the clubfeet he was born with made even walking and basic balance increasingly difficult. Improving his footwork on the basketball court seemed unattainable. Jamarion wanted to jump, run, and juke more than anything, but his clubfeet were getting in the way.

Seeking a better basic quality of life for their active 12 year old son, Jamarion’s family traveled to St. Louis to see Dr. Matthew Dobbs, a well regarded orthopedic surgeon specializing in pediatric foot deformity. The family learned that Jamarion would be a good candidate for surgery.

The summer before his 7th grade year, Jamarion had surgery with Dr. Dobbs and spent the summer gradually recovering. When it was time to return to school, Jamarion began regular physical therapy at Children’s Therapy T.E.A.M. His therapist, Sherrie Flory, DPT, quickly learned about Jamarion’s love of the game of basketball.

Therapy sessions included exercises geared toward improving Jamarion’s strength and range of motion in his feet and even occasionally opportunities to shoot hoops. During these hoop sessions, Sherrie learned that Jarmarion was a skilled shooter.

A New Basketball Season

While it was too soon after Jamarion’s surgery to play in games, Jamarion was eager to return to the basketball court. Even if he wasn’t playing in games, Jamarion wanted to support the team in whatever way he could. As the season progressed, Jamarion’s strength grew.

Sherrie made a call to Dr. Dobbs to discuss Jamarion’s progress. He was finally given the green flag to play. Jamarion was thrilled, but there was only one game left in the season. His expectations going into the final game were low. The season, however, ended up finishing on a high note.

A colleague told Sherrie to watch the local Channel 5 News featuring an impressive end to Jamarion’s basketball season. Sherrie beamed with pride and joy when she saw it. Jamarion was given the opportunity to take the game’s final shot. Not only did he make the shot, but the sportsmanship of all the boys on the court that night was an inspiration.

Now, Jamarion’s 8th grade basketball season at Lakeside Junior High is underway. Sherrie continues to carefully monitor Jamarion’s progress in physical therapy. She credits Jamarion’s competitive spirit, determination, and focus as keys to his success.
