TEAM Resource Library Topic: Music Therapy

Music TherapyThe American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines music therapy as “the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals.” Music therapy can be used to address an individual’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. It can offer an avenue for communication that can be helpful to those who have difficulty expressing themselves in words. Treatment may include composing, singing, moving to and/or listening to music. AMTA maintains a list of certified music therapists on their website.

Vibroacoustic Therapy
In the 1980s Olave Skille began researching the effects that physical sound vibrations (vibroacoustics) have on children with severe disabilities. He initially discovered that vibroacoustics could easily relax or stimulate children. He then observed the beneficial effects of vibroacoustics on individuals with conditions and symptoms that included autism, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, constipation, insomnia, pain and Parkinson’s Disease. Ongoing research in vibroacoustics continues today. Published research supporting the use of vibroacoustic therapy can be found at: www.musicandlearning.com.
